CISCO thinks that Cloud Computing is nothing but a marketing gimmick

CISCOA white paper published by CISCO clearly states that the company thinks that cloud computing is nothing but a marketing gimmick. The views of the company expressed in this paper cannot really be turned on as a writer’s fancy because they have a couple of good points that would make you think twice before shifting to cloud computing. Here’s an excerpt:

In the early days, farming was considered to be more of an independent profession and there were a lot of farmers working their own fields and whatever surplus they could produce they could keep the profits to themselves. But, gradually economy took the driver’s seat and the small farming lands gave way to farming corporations who claimed to be able to produce better stuff for half the price and that put farmers out of work – they actually had to go to East farming corporations to find work and even though the way we consume food has not changed drastically over the last couple of years, the way it is served has changed tremendously and if there is something that has driven this transition it is economics (with technology under the skin).

That is exactly what happened to conventional information technology. Just like the example of farmers explained above, there are a lot of other industries that have changed (for bad or better) and in all of the cases the change has been driven by economics and not technology. Some live examples would include the Industrial Revolution, telecom revolution and electricity generation system change etc. even to cloud computing is being touted as the next big thing in information technology, it is more of bells and whistles and the service providers are trying to point out the flaws in conventional information technology because they have a new product on their hands and they just got to make profits off it!

Frankly speaking, we are not experiencing a major change in the way information technology is seen and used by companies across the globe – it seems that there is an urge to replace the age-old data center-based information technology systems and push the global companies from the “eat as much as you can” buffet lunch systems to a more need-based system that definitely has the potential to churn higher profits.

Just like the farming corporations mentioned earlier, the cloud computing service providers are trying to take over the smaller data center based information technology infrastructures and that is definitely going to spell higher profits for them. But, what’s there in it for you? Well, they are going to tell you that hardware installations and software licenses would longer take up your creative brain space (and also pocket space) and that is going to help you focus better on your business. But, the reality is, almost all business owners out there have funds allocated for such purposes and that was the way it was meant to be before cloud computing took over. So, it’s not a pre-existing problem – it is more of a man-made problem that has a man-made solution in the form of cloud computing.

Another important question is why now? Well, if you have been doing your homework, you would understand that networking speeds have increased tremendously over the last couple of years and the price of data storage has also plummeted. Bulk hardware is now available a dime a dozen and it isn’t any different for software licenses. So, what better time than this to churn some money off cloud computing.
